Melissa Nguyen’s four monochromatic paintings stage a dynamic depiction of the night ocean. Informed by Boym’s On Diasporic Intimacy and Glissant’s The Right to Opacity, Nguyen reflects on the relationship between loss and memory through the persistence and irreducibility of the void. This series is indicative of a larger thread present in Nguyen’s practice: an examination of personal and familial histories, and where the media point lies for what’s exposed and what is kept hidden.
